The South African music scene was rocked to its core with the shocking news of the untimely death of rapper AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Jarred Forbes.
The 35-year-old hip-hop artist was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Durban, where he was hit six times by bullets fired from two unknown vehicles outside of the Wish Restaurant.
Sadly, AKA’s close friend Tebello Tibz Motsoane was also killed in the incident, while the rapper’s bodyguard was wounded.
AKA was no stranger to tragedy, as he lost his fiancé Anele “Nellie” Tembe to a fatal fall from a hotel window almost two years prior. But despite this heartache, the Supa Mega continued to make music that captured the hearts of the nation.
He rose to fame in 2009 with hits like “Mistakes,” “In My Walk,” and “Do It.” AKA’s debut album, Altar Ego, won him awards for Best Newcomer, Best Hip-Hop, and Best Produced Album at the Metro FM Awards.
The rapper was preparing to release his fourth studio album, Mass Country, which was set to drop on February 24, 2023. The first single off the highly anticipated album, “Lemons (Lemonade),” went gold in September 2022, and the latest track “Prada” featuring Khuli Chana received great acclaim.
AKA was also set to perform at a Durban nightclub as part of his birthday celebration on the night of his passing.
AKA leaves behind a legacy of great music and a devoted fanbase. He was also the proud father of DJ Zinhle’s daughter Kairo and was in a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai.
As we say farewell to this talented artist, we pay tribute to his life and work, and offer our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
